São Paulo expands climate monitoring technology

The government of São Paulo has expanded its climate resilience strategy by integrating advanced technological tools into the ‘SP Sempre Alerta’ Intelligence Panel. This initiative aims to anticipate responses to extreme weather events and protect the population from natural disasters such as floods, landslides, and fires.

The system now incorporates Earth Networks technology, which provides real-time data on the movement of rain cells to estimate when precipitation will reach neighboring municipalities. Additionally, the panel integrates risk maps from the Environmental Research Institute (IPA), which identify vulnerable areas by crossing environmental data with local population density.

To enhance operational coordination, the platform integrates real-time data from the Civil Police and the Fire Department. The state has also implemented the ‘Muralha de Fogo’ (Fire Wall) initiative, which utilizes highway cameras to monitor and combat wildfires. The Emergency Management Center (CGE) will issue daily bulletins with weather forecasts and risk classifications to assist local municipalities in taking preventive measures.
