São Paulo reports West Nile Fever and rising measles cases

The state of São Paulo is facing dual public health challenges with the emergence of West Nile Fever and a rise in measles cases.

Health authorities have confirmed the first two human cases of West Nile Fever in the state. One patient in Ribeirão Preto has recovered, while an 18-year-old in São José do Rio Preto remains hospitalized. The virus is transmitted by Culex mosquitoes.

Simultaneously, measles cases in São Paulo have reached 26 for 2026, a significant increase from just two cases last year. Most of these infections are concentrated in the capital, with additional cases in São Bernardo do Campo and Guarulhos. Investigations show that 19 of the infected individuals had incomplete or no vaccination history.

In response, the state government has launched intensive immunization efforts. A specialized measles vaccination campaign is active in the most affected cities for individuals aged 6 months to 59 years. Additionally, a broader multivacination campaign is underway across all 645 municipalities in São Paulo to update the vaccination records of children and adolescents under 15.
