Brazil sees rise in scorpion accidents, urges preventive actions

The state of Maranhão recorded 1,199 scorpion‑related accident notifications between January and June 2026, a 12 % decline from the same period in 2025. Two cases were classified as severe, but no deaths were reported. The municipality of Balsas led with 90 notifications, followed by Coelho Neto (72) and Buriti (71).

In other parts of Brazil, urban scorpion encounters are increasing. Health authorities in São Paulo stress that improper waste disposal, accumulated debris and uncontrolled insect populations create ideal habitats for scorpions. Recommended measures include keeping yards and surrounding areas clean, sealing cracks in walls, doors and drains, and avoiding the storage of items that provide shelter. Controlling cockroaches, the primary food source for scorpions, is also highlighted as an effective indirect strategy.

Cascavel in Paraná reported eight scorpion stings in the first half of 2026, including incidents during winter. Local health surveillance advises washing bite sites with soap and water and seeking immediate medical care. Antivenom treatment is available free of charge through the public health system, and early medical attention is emphasized to prevent complications, especially among children, the elderly and those with pre‑existing conditions.
