São Paulo invests R$ 1.19 billion in climate change prevention

The Government of São Paulo has allocated R$ 1.19 billion through the State Water Resources Fund (Fehidro) to fund projects aimed at preventing and adapting to extreme weather events. Since 2023, these resources have supported 1,297 projects across 338 municipalities, focusing on urban drainage, sanitation, water security, and water resource management.

The investment comes in response to climate change challenges and El Niño forecasts, which can alter rainfall and temperature patterns. To enhance preparedness, the state is restructuring its monitoring efforts by expanding the former 'Operação Chuvas' into a permanent operation. This expanded monitoring, scheduled through at least 2027, will address various threats including storms, heatwaves, droughts, and forest fires.

This initiative is part of a broader state climate adaptation strategy that includes a total investment portfolio of R$ 29 billion planned through 2029 to strengthen infrastructure and water security.
