São Paulo launches Bike SP pilot offering transit credits for cyclists

São Paulo is expanding its cycling culture with new guidance and community groups. Local initiatives such as OBike Anjoé, CicloFemi and Night Bikers provide lessons, safety tips and social rides, encouraging residents to adopt bicycles for health, stress relief and eco‑friendly transport. The city’s growing network of bike lanes and cycle tracks is making cycling more accessible across neighborhoods.

The municipal government will run the second Bike SP pilot in September‑October 2026. The program rewards up to two daily bike trips with credits on the Bilhete Único card for participants who register by August 24, complete a mandatory Android‑based safety mini‑course, and use the Bike SP app to log trips. Around 2,000 adult residents of São Paulo, especially from the East, South and North zones, are expected to join. Researchers from USP’s Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science and FGV Cidades, supported by FAPESP, CNPq and bike‑sharing firm Tembici, will evaluate the impact to inform permanent policy.
