São Paulo mobility assistance initiatives

In late July 2026, the São Paulo state government introduced two complementary programs aimed at easing travel costs and promoting sustainable transport. The first, the Cartão do Trabalhador Desempregado, offers a free digital card that grants unemployed workers (30‑180 days out of work) unlimited metro and suburban train rides for 90 days, with applications handled online or at a service desk in Palmeiras‑Barra Funda station.

A few hours later, the municipal government announced the second phase of the Bike SP pilot. Around 2,000 adult residents, especially from the East, South and North zones, can earn Bilhete Único credits for up to two daily bike trips after completing an Android‑based safety course and logging rides via the Bike SP app. The program is intended to expand cycling culture while reducing reliance on motorized transport.

Together, the initiatives reflect São Paulo’s broader effort to lower commuting expenses for vulnerable populations and to encourage eco‑friendly mobility through targeted subsidies and incentives.
