São Paulo launches Operation El Niño to prepare for extreme weather
The state of São Paulo has initiated ‘Operation El Niño 2026/2027’ to prepare municipalities for the potential impacts of extreme climatic events, such as heavy rains, floods, landslides, and heatwaves.
As part of the ‘SP Sempre Alerta’ initiative, the government is distributing essential equipment to various regions. Votuporanga received a water truck and personal protective equipment, while the Grande ABC region was provided with 280 operational items, including helmets, boots, and emergency tarps. Training workshops in Osasco have also been organized to instruct Civil Defense agents in emergency response, first aid, and contingency planning.
In addition to logistical support, the São Paulo State Health Secretariat (SES-SP) is implementing a health preparedness plan. This includes the planned distribution of vaccines, serums, and 45 types of pharmaceutical items to municipalities affected by natural disasters. The state is also coordinating with 17 Regional Health Departments to monitor risks and manage potential surges in medical demand caused by climate-related emergencies.
