São Paulo launches free transit for unemployed workers

Transport authorities in the São Paulo Metropolitan Region have introduced the ‘Credencial para Trabalhadores Desempregados’ (Unemployed Workers Credential) to assist citizens facing job loss. The program provides up to 90 days of free travel on CPTM trains and Metro lines to facilitate movement for job interviews, professional training courses, and essential services.

To qualify, individuals must have been unemployed for at least 30 days and be actively seeking new employment. Applicants must provide official documentation, including a government ID, CPF, work booklet (Carteira de Trabalho), proof of residence, and evidence of the termination of their previous employment contract, such as a CNIS contribution statement.

Beyond free transit, the initiative aims to support social integration and professional development. Some aspects of the program may also include access to professional qualification courses offered by the São Paulo City Hall and discounts at partnered establishments.
