São Paulo metro expansion and new line operations underway

Major infrastructure projects are currently reshaping the rail network in São Paulo. The expansion of Metro Line 2-Green aims to connect Vila Prudente to Penha, a move designed to redistribute passenger flow, alleviate congestion on Line 3-Red, and reduce travel times for residents in the East Zone heading toward Avenida Paulista.

The project involves significant engineering works, including excavation and the arrival of tunnel boring machines. Once completed, the expansion will create strategic integration hubs, such as the future Anália Franco station, which will connect with the Line 15-Silver monorail, and Penha station, which will link Line 2-Green with Line 3-Red and CPTM Line 11-Coral.

Meanwhile, the newly inaugurated Line 6-Orange is currently undergoing an “assisted operation” phase. Managed by LinhaUni, the service is limited to weekdays between 10:00 and 15:00, primarily attracting leisure travelers rather than daily commuters. According to Artesp, full commercial operation across eight stations is expected to roll out gradually by the end of the year as systems are validated.
