São Paulo Metro route for Linha 20-Rosa faces legal challenge
The Residents and Entrepreneurs Association of Jardins (AME Jardins) has petitioned the Public Ministry of São Paulo to challenge the route of the future Linha 20-Rosa metro line. The association argues that the current plan, which avoids the Avenida Brigadeiro Faria Lima axis, neglects a major employment hub. In response, the Public Ministry has requested clarifications from the São Paulo Metro company regarding the route definition, though no formal investigation has been opened.
The Metro company defends the current 24-station plan, citing technical and economic justifications. According to officials, the alternative route—which would have included more stations near Faria Lima—was discarded because it would cost R$ 26.1 billion, compared to the current R$ 24.9 billion estimate. This R$ 1.2 billion saving, combined with a shorter implementation period of approximately two years, was deemed decisive.
Additionally, the Metro company stated that the Faria Lima station lacks the capacity to serve as a simultaneous connection point for Lines 20, 22, and 4. The current plan instead facilitates transfers at the Fradique Coutinho station to maintain network balance and manage passenger demand effectively.
