São Paulo politicians weigh candidacies for upcoming 2024 elections

Progressistas politician Rafael Demarchi, former secretary of Economic Development, Labor and Youth in São Bernardo, said he is positioning himself as a centrist‑right option for a São Paulo seat in the Chamber of Deputies. He cited his work with Mayor Marcelo Lima, highlighted initiatives such as the Jurubatuba Week festival, and said he needs at least 70,000 votes to be elected. Demarchi also noted that a potential alliance with Pablo Marçal could dramatically lower his required vote total.

Former federal deputy José Genoinho, speaking on TV Fórum, advocated former Minister of Entrepreneurship Márcio França as a candidate for governor of São Paulo. Genoinho argued the progressive field should field a centrist candidate to challenge the incumbent and possibly support President Lula in a second round. He also commented on the political situation of Senator Jaques Wagner amid a financial scandal, urging Wagner to defend himself while relinquishing the government leadership in the Senate.
