São Paulo prosecutor charges driver in pedestrian accident

The Public Prosecutor's Office of the State of São Paulo has charged Nivaldo Alex dos Santos, a nursing assistant, for three counts of attempted murder involving 'dolo eventual'—where the perpetrator assumes the risk of killing. The charges stem from an incident in São José do Rio Preto where the defendant struck three pedestrians on a crosswalk.

According to investigators, dos Santos had been consuming alcohol at a bar for several hours before driving while intoxicated and without a valid driver's license. He reportedly accelerated to attempt to beat a yellow light, hitting a group of pedestrians. The accident left three people injured, including a 20-year-old man who suffered traumatic brain injury and two teenagers who sustained various fractures. The court has maintained the defendant's preventive detention.
