São Paulo police misconduct and homicide cases

Overview

Legal proceedings and investigations have surfaced regarding multiple incidents of violence and misconduct involving the São Paulo Military Police.

In São José do Rio Preto, a second suspect was arrested in connection with the May murder of Weberton Rodrigo de Araujo, a man experiencing homelessness who was reportedly beaten, shot, and set on fire.

In a separate case, the Military Justice system has convicted Captain Francisco Carlos Laroca Júnior and Corporal Fabiano Rizzo for the April 2023 homicide of Sergeant Rullian Ricardo da Silva during a dispute over work schedules. The conviction includes charges of qualified homicide and procedural fraud. Laroca was sentenced to 22 years in a closed regime plus approximately 11 months for fraud, while Rizzo received over 17 years in a closed regime plus six months for fraud. Although the verdict was reached by a majority vote, both defendants were permitted to remain free while appealing the decision. The victim had served 17 years in the force.

Furthermore, an internal investigation by the Military Police Corregedoria determined that Soldier Yasmin Cursino Ferreira acted with the intent to kill Thawanna da Silva Salmázio during an encounter in Cidade Tiradentes. The report rejected claims of self-defense, finding evidence of qualified intentional homicide.
