São Paulo prosecutors dismantle R$ 500 million pyramid scheme
The São Paulo Public Prosecutor's Office (MP-SP) has launched a major operation to dismantle a criminal network operating a massive financial pyramid scheme. The investigation aims to recover approximately R$ 500 million stolen from more than 2,000 victims across Brazil.
The group allegedly lured investors by promising high returns through a fictitious gold trading business in the international mineral market. Instead of investing the funds, the organization used the capital to fund the lavish lifestyles of its leaders and to pay fraudulent returns to early participants to maintain the illusion of legitimacy.
Authorities executed 13 search and seizure warrants in the cities of São Paulo, Greater São Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro as part of the crackdown.
