São Paulo homicide decline femicide increase police deaths gender‑based violence

The São Paulo state public‑security report shows a 7.3% decline in total homicides to 1,149 cases in the January‑June 2026 period, the lowest figure since 2001. The capital recorded 227 homicides, down 8.4% from the same period in 2025, while the metropolitan area fell 26.2% to 194 cases.

Police forces were responsible for 356 deaths during the same six months, averaging more than 13 fatalities per week, a 2.4% reduction from the 365 deaths recorded in 2025.

Femicide cases rose 10% to 142 victims in the first half of the year, the highest total since the series began, although June saw a drop to 17 victims from 21 the previous year. Other violence indicators also increased: breaches of protective measures reached 2,099 in June (+23.3% YoY), injuries against women rose to 5,604 (+10.5% YoY), and vulnerable‑rape reports climbed to 848 (+129 victims).
