São Paulo records rise in yellow fever cases and deaths

The São Paulo state health authorities highlighted their communication campaign as one of the country's top health‑communication cases. The initiative, presented to the Pan‑American Health Organization, stressed public information, social mobilisation and integrated data systems. In January‑February 2025 the state administered 371,100 vaccine doses, 36.8% more than the same period a year earlier, with February alone seeing a 66.2% increase to 193,395 doses.

In 2026 a new case was confirmed—a 55‑year‑old unvaccinated man from Lagoinha—bringing the year's total to 11 confirmed yellow‑fever infections and six deaths. Nine of the cases, including five fatalities, occurred in the Vale do Paraíba region, and none of the patients had a vaccination history. The previous year the state recorded 57 cases and 35 deaths. Officials have intensified vaccination alerts, offering the free single‑dose vaccine at all basic health units across the state's 645 municipalities.
