São Paulo regions implement new electric vehicle traffic rules

New regulations regarding the use of electric bicycles, self-propelled equipment, and mopeds are being implemented in various parts of São Paulo state.

In Indaiatuba, the municipal government sanctioned the ‘Evelyn Daiane Souza Ribeiro Law’ to organize the use of public spaces and improve traffic safety. The law mandates that electric bicycles and self-propelled devices use cycle paths, cycle lanes, or authorized public roads. In areas without specific cycling infrastructure, circulation is permitted on urban roads with a maximum speed of 40 km/h. Mopeds must adhere to the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB) and National Traffic Council (Contran) resolutions.

In the city of São Paulo, recent enforcement operations focused on educational approaches rather than penalties. Despite new rules taking effect that allow for fines of R$ 130.16 for aggressive driving or unauthorized circulation, the Companhia de Engenharia de Tráfego (CET) reported that no riders of electric bicycles or scooters were fined during recent inspections on Avenida Brigadeiro Faria Lima and Rua da Consolação. The CET conducted 111 educational approaches, emphasizing speed limits such as 20 km/h in exclusive cycle lanes and 6 km/h on sidewalks shared with pedestrians.
