São Paulo secures billions in investments for hybrid vehicle production and infrastructure upgrades

General Motors announced an additional R$ 3.5 billion investment in São Paulo, bringing its 2024 commitment in the state to R$ 7 billion. The funds will modernize existing plants and launch production of hybrid flex‑fuel vehicles that combine ethanol or gasoline engines with electric propulsion. The announcement was made by state vice‑governor Felício Ramuth and GM South‑America president Thomas Owsianski, who noted the company’s 101‑year history in the region.

The Brazil Development Bank (BNDES) has approved R$ 152.6 billion for São Paulo projects over the past three years, a 67 % increase. Major allocations include R$ 10.75 billion for modernising the Rodovia Presidente Dutra, R$ 2.4 billion for extending Metro Line 2, R$ 12.3 billion for the Line 6‑Laranja, R$ 6.4 billion for the Intercidades Eixo Norte train, R$ 1.3 billion for the Rodoanel Norte, and R$ 2 billion to expand Congonhas airport capacity. Additional financing targets the health‑tech sector and Embraer’s eVTOL projects. BNDES president Aloizio Mercadante said, “Metade do PIB brasileiro passa pela Dutra,” emphasizing the projects’ expected boost to logistics, competitiveness and emissions reductions for millions of residents.
