The São Paulo state government announced an updated methodology for assessing water‑security within its Integrated Metropolitan System (SIM). The new approach replaces the previous single‑year reference with a 15‑year historical series, allowing more accurate anticipation of drought risk and better capture of climate cycles such as El Niño and La Niña. The Cantareira reservoir system now has its own dedicated contingency curve, and operational decisions will follow the most restrictive condition between SIM and Cantareira. Monthly technical notes will formalize the assessment, while existing supply measures such as the Differentiated Supply Regime and Night‑time Demand Management remain unchanged. Authorities stress that the refined parameters complement, rather than replace, public water‑conservation efforts.
