São Paulo tears down historic Cruz da Esperança club for Campo de Marte park project

On Wednesday, 29 April, municipal authorities in São Paulo began demolishing the Grêmio Recreativo Cruz da Esperança, a community football and cultural hub that had existed for nearly seven decades in the Campo de Marte area. The demolition followed a court‑ordered reintegration of possession approved in March and was carried out by the Metropolitan Civil Guard under the administration of Mayor Ricardo Nunes.

The 385,000 m² site, originally public land managed by the Brazilian Air Force, was transferred to the city in 2022 as part of a debt‑settlement deal with the Union. It was then granted to a private consortium, Consórcio Campo de Marte, led by the firm Progen, which holds a 35‑year concession to build and operate the future Parque Municipal Campo de Marte.

Club president Antônio de Jesus Marcos, a member since 1979, lamented the loss, describing the club as a “family” that nurtured generations of players and hosted samba, capoeira and candomblé activities. About 3,000 people gathered the night before the demolition to protest the eviction. The consortium has offered displaced clubs access to new football fields within the park, a proposal rejected by Cruz da Esperança over concerns for its cultural programs.
