São Paulo Cruz da Esperança demolition and legal dispute

Overview

In late April, municipal authorities in São Paulo began the demolition of the Grêmio Recreativo Cruz da Esperança, a community football and cultural hub in the Campo de Marte area that had operated for nearly seventy years. The demolition was carried out by the Metropolitan Civil Guard following a court-ordered repossession of the land. The site, which was transferred to the city in 2022, is slated to become the Parque Municipal Campo de Marte under a 35-year concession held by the Consórcio Campo de Marte.

Club leadership and protesters opposed the eviction, citing the loss of a site that hosted samba, capoeira, and candomblé activities. While the consortium offered displaced clubs access to new fields within the future park, the club rejected the proposal.

In August, a Federal Court suspended new physical interventions at the site. Following a request by the Federal Public Defender's Office, the Tribunal Regional Federal da 3ª Região prohibited the city and the concessionaire from conducting works such as excavations or earthmoving until technical studies are finished. This ruling aims to protect potential archaeological and cultural heritage, as the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (Iphan) identified potential historical vestiges linked to African-matrix religions remaining in the soil.
