São Paulo Public Ministry launches investigation into CPTM rail failures
The São Paulo Public Ministry (MP‑SP) opened a civil inquiry on 28 July 2024 to examine serious service failures on the metropolitan rail lines 11‑Coral, 12‑Safira and 13‑Jade. The incidents occurred on 23 July, three days after the private operator Trivia Trens assumed responsibility for the lines.
The July 23 outage involved a loss of power and a fire on a Line 12 train, forcing passengers to abandon the carriages and walk along the tracks while stations became overcrowded. The state transport regulator Artesp ordered the state‑run CPTM to resume operation of the three lines for an initial period of up to 90 days. MP‑SP has demanded detailed information from CPTM, Trivia Trens, Artesp and the Metropolitan Transport Secretariat, including data on incidents, performance, sanctions and the act that triggered the temporary hand‑back to CPTM. The ministry also highlighted a 275 % rise in recorded incidents on Line 11 during the assisted‑operation period.
