São Paulo water‑pressure program cuts 160 billion L loss, new monitoring method launched

A pressure‑management program run by Sabesp and the São Paulo state government has cut water losses by an estimated 160 billion liters since August, enough to supply the metropolitan area for two months and serve roughly 28 million residents. The nightly reduction in pipe pressure also lowers the risk of leaks and pipe bursts, improving service stability and cutting energy and chemical use in water treatment.

Separately, the state regulator announced a new methodology for monitoring water‑security in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo. The updated system adds a specific hydrological curve for the Cantareira reservoir, incorporates 15 years of climatic data (including El Niño and La Niña events), and will publish monthly monitoring ranges. The rollout coincides with planned water‑transfer projects – Itapanhaú (adding 2,000 L s⁻¹) and Guaratuba (adding 200 L s⁻¹) – aimed at strengthening supply during droughts.
