São Paulo Zoo receives nine endangered parrots rescued from trafficking

The São Paulo Zoo has expanded its conservation efforts with the arrival of nine parrots belonging to two endangered species: six red-faced parrots (Amazona brasiliensis) and three buff-faced parrots (Amazona pretrei).

The birds were transferred to the zoo by the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) after surviving an international wildlife trafficking attempt. The incident involved a passenger attempting to smuggle 24 eggs at Galeão International Airport by hiding them under clothing.

Following quarantine and clinical evaluations, the birds were moved to the Conservation Grove. The technical team is now working toward establishing reproductive pairs to strengthen ex situ populations and potentially provide offspring for future protection programs. These species are part of the National Action Plan for Atlantic Forest Birds, coordinated by ICMBio.
