Endangered parrot conservation in São Paulo

Overview

Nine parrots from two endangered species—six purple-faced parrots (Amazona brasiliensis) and three thick-billed parrots (Amazona pretrei)—have been introduced to the São Paulo Zoo. The birds were rescued following an international wildlife trafficking attempt at Galeão International Airport in October 2025, where a traveler attempted to smuggle 24 eggs under her clothing.

After the eggs hatched, nine birds survived through intensive care and technical monitoring provided by Ibama. Following quarantine and clinical evaluations, the parrots were moved to the zoo’s Conservation Grove. Conservation teams are now working toward establishing reproductive pairs to strengthen ex situ populations as part of the National Action Plan for Atlantic Forest Birds.
