São Paulo expands rental‑aid program for women fleeing domestic violence

The São Paulo state government has broadened its rental‑assistance scheme that provides a temporary cash grant of R$ 500 to women who have obtained protective measures against domestic abuse. The benefit, paid for up to six months and renewable for another six‑month term, is intended to cover rent and basic expenses so that victims can leave abusive households.

Since its launch in 2023, more than 8,400 women have received the aid, with participation from almost 600 municipalities. Beneficiaries such as “Aurora” and “Cícera” reported that the grant allowed them to secure independent housing, regain employment prospects and improve their health and that of their children. The program is coordinated by the secretariat of social development and linked to the broader “SP Por Todas” network that offers shelter, legal assistance and psychosocial support.

The initiative is part of a larger effort to break the cycle of violence by addressing the economic dependence that often ties victims to their aggressors. Officials say additional units will be opened in more municipalities to reach a greater number of women in need.
