French left-wing primary begins to select 2027 presidential candidate
The French social-democratic bloc is holding a primary election on October 9 and 10 to select a candidate for the 2027 presidential election. Approximately 140,000 voters, including party members and supporters who paid a 15 euro fee, are participating in the electronic vote.
Five candidates are competing: Olivier Faure, Raphaël Glucksmann, Ségolène Royal, Jérôme Guedj, and Emmanuel Maurel. While the candidates share many policy views, they remain divided on the strategy of forming an alliance with Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s La France Insoumise (LFI). Glucksmann and Guedj are noted for their opposition to the LFI movement, whereas Faure, Royal, and Maurel emphasize the necessity of a united left to counter the rise of the National Rally.
If no candidate secures an absolute majority in the first round, a second round of voting is scheduled for October 16 or 17. The primary aims to establish a unified front for the 2027 election, though observers note the challenge of building momentum against the current political influence of Jean-Luc Mélenchon.
