Ghana President Mahama announces US$10bn economic plan
During his ‘Resetting Ghana Tour’ of the Upper East Region, President John Dramani Mahama announced several major policy initiatives and infrastructure updates. A central component is the ‘New Economy’ plan, a US$10 billion investment programme to be distributed across seven strategic sectors over four years, with US$5 billion specifically earmarked for agriculture and agro-processing.
In education, the President commissioned the Paga Senior High School E-Block and addressed the Free SHS programme. He stated that dedicated funding has been secured to improve food quality and access, with a goal to eliminate the double-track system by 2027. He also reaffirmed a commitment to completing stalled projects, such as the central laboratory at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS).
Infrastructure remains a priority through the ‘Big Push’ programme, which aims to link regional capitals with high-quality roads, including the Navrongo-Chuchuliga-Tumu-Wa route. Additionally, the President outlined plans to expand domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing to reduce the current 70 per cent reliance on imported medicines, aiming to lower costs and strengthen the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
