Social isolation and smartphone use linked to increased health risks

Research indicates that chronic loneliness and social isolation pose severe risks to physical and mental health. According to data shared by Psychology Today, chronic loneliness can increase the risk of death by 26% annually in older adults or patients with serious illnesses. This phenomenon is linked to elevated cortisol levels, poor sleep quality, and weakened immune responses. The World Health Organization has previously identified the lack of social connection as a global public health crisis that erodes self-esteem and increases vulnerability to depression and anxiety.

In the context of digital habits, experts warn that smartphone use and social isolation are becoming increasingly common. Digital education expert Laura Cuesta emphasizes that when monitoring adolescents, the amount of screen time should not be the sole metric for addiction. Instead, caregivers should look for behavioral shifts, such as 'vamping' (using screens late at night), changes in sleep and eating habits, neglect of personal hygiene, and the displacement of healthy leisure activities like sports or face-to-face socialization.
