Social media hashtag usage shifts toward indexing and private messaging
Modern social media marketing strategies are shifting away from the use of hashtags for viral reach. While many brands continue to use generic tags in hopes of mass visibility, Instagram director Adam Mosseri has noted that hashtags do not directly increase reach. Instead, their primary function has evolved into an indexing tool that helps internal search engines and AI systems categorize content for the correct audience.
There is also a significant shift in consumer behavior toward private communication. Data from the cloud communications firm Sinch indicates that 75% of users prefer interacting with businesses via instant messaging rather than public comments. Mario Marchetti, CEO of Sinch LATAM, suggests that companies should move away from using hashtags for mass searches and instead use them as context sensors to drive personalized, private conversations with users.
