Europe experiences widespread protests over cost of living and education
Massive demonstrations have erupted across several European nations, driven by grievances regarding the rising cost of living, housing shortages, inflation, and deteriorating public education systems. In France, protests involving hundreds of thousands of people—with some estimates reaching 800,000—were sparked by student frustrations over school funding and resources. While many marches remained peaceful, clashes with police occurred in various cities, leading to approximately 1,000 arrests.
In Italy, significant protests took place in Rome and Milan, targeting government policies and the high cost of living. Authorities deployed 500 soldiers to Milan to maintain order following previous unrest. Italian law enforcement reported that nine people were arrested and 371 others were temporarily detained during the demonstrations.
Other affected regions include Spain, where approximately 25,000 people marched in Madrid to defend public pensions, and Portugal and Belgium, where demonstrators voiced concerns over social policies and housing. In Albania, protests have focused on affordable education and tourism projects. The movement is characterized by a shared sense of economic anxiety among diverse populations, particularly the youth, facing precarious living conditions and social inequality.
