Portugal political parties clash over education crisis and reforms

Portuguese political parties are engaged in intense disputes regarding national reforms and the education sector. The Socialist Party (PS) has signaled its intention to request a parliamentary inquiry into the education system, citing a crisis where hundreds of students lack school placements at the start of the academic year. PS leader José Luís Carneiro attributed these issues to the dismantling of Ministry of Education structures.

In response, Iniciativa Liberal (IL) leader Mariana Leitão stated the party will withhold its position on the inquiry until it receives full clarification from the Ministry regarding student placements and recent national exam issues. IL parliamentary leader Mário Amorim Lopes criticized the PSD, Chega, and PS, labeling them a “majority of blockers” that prevent necessary national reforms.

Simultaneously, the Juntos pelo Povo (JPP) party, led by Élvio Sousa, announced a new political phase focused on presenting concrete solutions for regional and national issues, including constitutional revision and fiscal reform. Meanwhile, the PS has accused Chega of failing to support families facing rising living costs, while IL has accused the PSD of attempting to “buy votes” through temporary tax and pension adjustments.
