Portuguese political dispute over education crisis

Portuguese political parties have entered a period of intense dispute regarding a crisis in the education sector, specifically concerning student placements and national exam issues. The Socialist Party (PS) initially signaled its intention to request a parliamentary inquiry, attributing the crisis to the “dismantling of Ministry of Education structures.”

Following this, the PS National Secretariat announced it would unanimously vote in favor of establishing a parliamentary inquiry commission, a proposal originally introduced by the Left Bloc. The Chega party has also indicated it will likely support the commission.

As the parliamentary inquiry (CPI) into national exam digitalization issues moves forward, Education Minister Fernando Alexandre has criticized the Socialist Party. He accused them of focusing on “obstructing reforms and protecting established interests” rather than providing constructive ideas. Despite this friction, the Minister stated he is ready to participate in the inquiry, noting that his ministry has provided extensive information regarding external evaluations.

In addition to the political dispute over digitalization, local criticism has emerged regarding the start of the school year. Concerns have been raised in regions such as Setúbal regarding teacher shortages and insufficient funding for school renovations.
