Society of Saint Pius X clashes with Vatican over recent consecrations and doctrinal decree

The Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) conducted a series of episcopal consecrations that prompted the Vatican to issue new excommunications. SSPX leaders, including Father Charles Murr, described the response as an "emergency" and criticized the Holy See for what they view as hypocrisy, remarking, “There’s no way you can come here, be around these priests and these faithful, and say this is not Catholic.”

In a separate communication, SSPX Superior General Don Davide Pagliarani sent a formal letter to Pope Francis contesting a recent decision by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. The letter likened the Vatican’s actions to being offered “a stone, a serpent, and a scorpion” when asking for guidance, and reiterated the Society’s commitment to preserving tradition while pleading for a more conciliatory approach.

Both items reflect ongoing tensions between the SSPX and the Roman Curia over doctrinal authority and the status of the Society within the Catholic Church.
