SSPX Episcopal Consecrations and Vatican Sanctions

On 1 July 2026 the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) performed episcopal consecrations at its mother house in Écône, Switzerland. A letter from the SSPX Superior General thanked the worldwide faithful who attended despite a storm, praised the ceremony and denounced the Vatican’s “unprecedented” sanctions that target the newly consecrated bishops, SSPX members and lay supporters.

The Holy See responded by reaffirming that the consecrations were illicit, maintaining the excommunication of the participants and imposing harsh penalties on the society’s clergy and members. Polish commentators have since argued that the Vatican’s stance is inconsistent, questioning whether the SSPX should be labelled a schismatic group and highlighting a broader crisis of Catholic practice in Europe.

The controversy remains confined to the SSPX’s internal dispute with the Vatican, with no new legislation announced, but it continues to stir debate among Catholics worldwide.
