Socioeconomic studies examine Ecuadorian tourism and hotel sectors

Recent research in Ecuador highlights the complex socioeconomic impacts of the tourism and hospitality industries in specific regions.

In the El Carmen parish of La Maná, Cotopaxi, a study found that tourist resorts contribute to job creation in administration, service, maintenance, and security. While the industry stimulates local commerce and enhances the area’s image, the study noted that income stability is highly dependent on weekends and peak seasons. Additionally, increased tourism has led to challenges such as congestion, price increases, waste generation, and the deterioration of natural spaces.

In the Salinas canton, research into the hotel sector reveals that tax burdens and varying levels of tax culture impact economic sustainability. Approximately 50% of taxpayers in the study showed limitations in their knowledge of tax regulations, with income tax identified as a primary challenge. The sector also faces financial difficulties, including liquidity weaknesses, high dependence on external financing, and reduced profitability.
