Sofia named top European travel destination for 2027

Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, has been ranked as the top European destination for 2027 according to a vote by European Best Destinations subscribers. The city secured the first position due to its combination of ancient history, contemporary cultural life, and proximity to mountains. Key attractions highlighted include the St. George Rotunda, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, and the UNESCO-listed Boyana Church.

Lisbon, Portugal, followed in second place, while Copenhagen, Denmark, took third. Other notable cities in the rankings include Cannes, Basel, Bristol, Leuven, Milan, Calpe, and Verona. The selection was determined by a 33-day voting process involving over 11,000 subscribers.

In separate travel recommendations, The Times highlighted Bulgarian ski resorts Pamporovo and Borovets as affordable alternatives to expensive destinations like Val d’Isère. Pamporovo is noted as ideal for beginners due to its gentle slopes, while Borovets is described as a lively destination suitable for intermediate skiers, offering instruction costs significantly lower than those in Austria.
