Sofia named top European city break destination

Overview

Sofia has been named the best European destination for short city breaks in 2027 by the organization European Best Destinations. The ranking was determined through a 33-day vote involving 11,614 participants from a shortlist of 64 cities.

The Bulgarian capital outperformed other major hubs, including Lisbon, Copenhagen, Cannes, and Basel. The recognition is attributed to the city’s historical heritage, cultural landmarks, and proximity to Vitosha Mountain. Specific sites highlighted include the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the UNESCO-listed Boyana Church, the ancient ruins of Serdica, and the St. George Rotunda.

Sofia secured the first position ahead of Lisbon, which took second place, and Copenhagen, which ranked third. Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev noted that the award provides an opportunity to showcase the city to an international audience and stimulate local business. Following the announcement, European Best Destinations plans to launch an international tourism campaign for the city over the next 12 months.
