Sokoine University of Agriculture trains Tanzanians in carbon trading

Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) has conducted capacity-building training for officials and citizens involved in carbon trading through its project focused on carbon revenue assessment for community forest management in Tanzania.

The initiative targets stakeholders from village forest reserves and areas already participating in the carbon market. The training aims to provide understanding of the criteria and procedures required to enter the carbon trade, enabling villages to make informed decisions and improve revenue governance.

Dr. Siima Bakengesa from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism noted that such training is vital for biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation through participatory forest management. The project seeks to ensure that carbon revenues are used for sustainable forest management and local development. In one instance, the Tanganyika District Council reported receiving over 34 billion Tanzanian shillings from carbon trading activities.
