Sokoine University of Agriculture development initiatives

Overview

Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) has undertaken various initiatives to support economic and environmental development in Tanzania.

In late September 2026, the university conducted capacity-building training for officials and citizens regarding carbon trading. This project, focused on carbon revenue assessment for community forest management, aims to help village forest reserves understand the criteria and procedures for entering the carbon market. The initiative seeks to improve revenue governance and ensure funds are used for sustainable forest management and local development.

By early October 2026, the university’s focus expanded to include industry collaboration to enhance graduate employability. Discussions between SUA administration and private sector leaders aimed to bridge the gap between academic training and labor market requirements through practical experience and mentorship. During these discussions, NMB Bank announced an allocation of 20 billion Tanzanian shillings to support startup projects for youth and special interest groups, intended to provide graduates with practical business experience.
