Sokoto Government probes mosque attack and mob killing

The Sokoto State Government has established a committee of Islamic scholars (Ulama) to investigate an attack on the Sheikh Musa Lukuwa Jumu’at Mosque in the Mabera area. The investigation aims to determine the immediate and remote causes of recent religious tensions in the region.

The incident occurred on September 11, when Sheikh Musa Lukuwa was allegedly stabbed in the neck following Juma’at prayers. In the ensuing chaos, worshippers overpowered and killed the suspected assailant before security forces could intervene.

The government has ordered the immediate closure of the mosque, designating it a crime scene. Meanwhile, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has condemned both the initial assault on the cleric and the subsequent extrajudicial killing by the mob, calling for a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served through proper legal channels rather than “jungle justice.”
