Sokoto mosque attack and religious unrest

Overview

Violence erupted in the Mabera area of Sokoto following an attack on the Sheikh Musa Lukuwa Jumu’at Mosque. During or shortly after Jumu’at prayers, an unidentified man allegedly stabbed Islamic cleric Sheikh Musa Ayuba Lukuwa in the neck.

In the aftermath of the stabbing, worshippers overpowered the assailant. The situation escalated into a mob killing, with reports indicating the attacker died from injuries sustained while being beaten by the crowd. Police have confirmed one death related to the incident.

In response to the violence and rising religious tensions, the Sokoto State Government designated the mosque a crime scene and ordered its immediate closure. The government also established an advisory committee of Islamic scholars (Ulama) to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the unrest. Additionally, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has condemned both the initial assault on the cleric and the subsequent extrajudicial killing, calling for justice to be served through legal channels rather than “jungle justice.”
