Sokoto State: Deadly attack on Ungushi community leaves dozens dead

Armed attackers, suspected to be members of the Lakurawa terrorist group, launched a deadly assault on the Ungushi community in the Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, Nigeria. The violence, which reportedly began during Friday prayers, resulted in significant casualties. While police reported at least 28 deaths, other local sources and community leaders cited a higher toll of approximately 32 residents and four soldiers.

The victims included various community members such as farmers, traders, and the Chief Imam of the Ungushi Izala Jumu’at Mosque, Imam Aliyu. In addition to the loss of life, the attackers reportedly set fire to houses, shops, and vehicles, and stole over 300 cattle and seven camels from the area.

In response to the attack, the Sokoto State Government has directed security agencies to intensify operations and pursue the perpetrators. Local community members reportedly engaged in a confrontation with the gunmen, successfully neutralizing approximately 13 fighters. The incident has caused widespread fear, leading to the displacement of residents from Ungushi and neighboring communities.
