Sokratis Famellos urges stronger fire service and local governance after Western Thessaloniki wildfire

A large wildfire swept the Oraiokastro and Filothei areas in western Thessaloniki, Greece, burning across forest, agricultural, urban and industrial zones. The fire is now fully contained, though two damaged plants continue to emit smoke.

Syriza‑PS leader Sokratis Famellos visited the scene, receiving updates from fire‑service and army officials. He said, “Only a strong State can cope with such difficult conditions,” and called for permanent staffing increases in the fire service, as well as greater funding, planning and personnel for municipal authorities. Famellos also warned of aerial pollution, urging strict protective measures for residents and farm workers.

Mayor Pantelis Tsakiris reported that emergency measures and evacuations have been completed, that the charitable shelter “Agios Pantaleimon” will resume operations soon, and that damage assessments by the Central Macedonia region and local municipalities will begin tomorrow. Fire crews will stay on alert for the next 24 hours.
