Solana Agave 4.2 update introduces larger transactions and potential network bugs

Solana is implementing a major update to its validator client, Agave 4.2, developed by Anza. The update introduces 200ms blocks and a new v1 transaction format that increases the size limit from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes. This change allows for more complex operations, such as larger cryptographic proofs and multisig approvals, by utilizing the QUIC protocol to bypass previous IPv6 MTU constraints.

However, a potential bug has been identified in the pending mainnet update. The new format could cause software incompatibility, potentially freezing network indexers, data streaming services, and block explorers that cannot recognize the v1 structure. Additionally, there is a risk that transaction fee caps managed by sponsors could be silently deactivated, leading to unexpected costs if operators do not update their software before the first v1 transaction occurs.
