Solana implements faster slot times and prepares for Alpenglow upgrade
Solana is undergoing significant technical transitions, including the implementation of the SIMD-0525 proposal and the upcoming Alpenglow mainnet upgrade. On October 9, at the start of Epoch 1053, the network activated a target slot time of 200 milliseconds, down from previous stages of 400 and 250 milliseconds. Initial data from Solana Compass showed an average slot time of 218.3 milliseconds during the first 26.2 hours of this change.
In preparation for the Alpenglow upgrade, Jito has outlined specific validator software and maintenance requirements. The Alpenglow upgrade aims to replace Solana’s TowerBFT voting layer with Votor, which is intended to reduce block finality from approximately 12.8 seconds to roughly 150 milliseconds.
During the transition to Alpenglow, Block Assembly Marketplace (BAM) nodes will enter maintenance mode and temporarily utilize the standard Jito-Agave Block Engine. While bundled transactions are expected to remain operational, Multi-Packet Processing and Dynamic Block Incentives will be temporarily unavailable. Jito has also adjusted the BAM auction cadence from 25 milliseconds to 20 milliseconds to align with the network's shorter slot times.
