Solana mainnet performance upgrades
Overview
Solana has implemented a series of mainnet upgrades aimed at increasing network capacity and reducing latency.
On July 29, the network increased its mainnet block limit from 60 million to 100 million compute units (CUs) following the activation of proposal SIMD-0286. This 66% capacity increase was designed to accommodate rising demand from trading and payment applications while maintaining a 400ms block time.
Following this, the network successfully executed its first speed upgrade, reducing the target slot time from approximately 400ms to 350ms. This transition, which began at Epoch 1020, marks the first phase of a four-stage plan under the SIMD-0525 improvement proposal. The long-term roadmap aims to progressively lower slot times to 300ms, 250ms, and eventually 200ms.
To maintain a consistent theoretical maximum of approximately 250 million compute units per second, the maximum compute units allowed per block were reduced to 87.5 million CUs at the 350ms target. Jacob Creech, Vice President of Technology at the Solana Foundation, described the implementation as entering ‘a new era of 350ms.’
Future stages of the rollout are tentatively targeted for the Agave v4.2 upgrade, a validator client developed by Anza. This phased approach is intended to allow validator operators and developers to test network stability as block production speeds increase. Additionally, the team plans to eventually move network parameters on-chain to allow clients to query parameters directly without manual version updates.
