Solana reduces block production time to 200ms

Solana has completed a multi-stage rollout to reduce its target block production time to 200 milliseconds. This final step, part of the SIMD-0525 improvement proposal, reduces the network's original 400-millisecond slot target by half, allowing for five block-production opportunities per second instead of 2.5.

Anza, the developer of the Agave validator client, confirmed the activation. The upgrade also shortens the time required to complete a network epoch from approximately 48 hours to 24 hours. While the frequency of block production has doubled, the computing budget per block has been reduced from 37.5 million to 30 million compute units to maintain stable overall processing capacity.

These shorter slots are intended to improve transaction responsiveness for decentralized trading platforms and market makers by providing more frequent updates to the ledger state. The Solana Foundation has identified the Alpenglow upgrade as the network's next major milestone.
