Solana reduces target block time to 250 milliseconds

Solana has implemented a protocol change via proposal SIMD-0525 to reduce its target slot time from 300 milliseconds to 250 milliseconds. This adjustment increases the network's cadence to four slots per second, representing a nearly 17% increase in block production frequency.

While the change accelerates the timing of block production, it does not inherently increase raw computational throughput. To maintain stability, the proposal reduces the computation and data limits for each individual slot in proportion to its shorter duration. Consequently, the total processing ceiling per unit of time remains relatively consistent.

The update affects network validators by shortening the real-world duration of leadership windows and epochs. For example, a leadership window of four slots now lasts exactly one second, compared to 1.2 seconds under the previous 300-millisecond configuration. Additionally, because an epoch consists of a fixed 432,000 slots, the total duration of an epoch is also reduced.
