Total solar eclipse sweeps across Europe and Greenland
A total solar eclipse occurred on August 12, 2026, passing over parts of Europe, Greenland, and Iceland. The path of totality included regions in Spain, Iceland, and Greenland, where the moon completely obscured the sun, causing the sky to darken and temperatures to drop. In Greenland, Oceanwide Expeditions positioned vessels in Scoresby Sund to allow passengers to witness the event from the Arctic fjords.
The European Space Agency captured the Moon’s shadow moving across the continent from geostationary orbit. In Spain, experts advised observers to watch the changing colors and shadows in the landscape during the final minutes of the partial phase.
Looking ahead, a significant total solar eclipse is scheduled for August 2, 2027, which will be visible in southern Spain and parts of North Africa, including Morocco, Algeria, and Egypt. This 2027 event is expected to feature a much longer duration of totality than the 2026 eclipse.
